Also Ed you were right on protection.  Actualy even MORE so.  If a creature has protection from a color it can't be affected by any abilities, spells, instants from that color.  All enchantments or equipment are removed if they match the color, and it takes no damage when blocking but, it also can't BE BLOCKED by that color.  I don't think we did that last one, last time, did we?  So protection is a dirty dirty power.

--[[User:76.164.21.217|76.164.21.217]] 11:27, 16 November 2007 (MST)Using a card to regenerate a creature does tap them if it says regenerate instead of reduce all damage to zero or prevent damage.  And your protection from a color thing is mostly right.  All damage is reduced to zero, it cant be targeted by spells of that color and it cannot be blocked by creatures of that color.  But, for instance, there is a white creature (a knight whose name I cant recall) who has protection from red, it would still be destroyed by Anarchy (destroy all white permanents in play).  There is no damage to prevent and its not targeted.

Revision as of 13:27, 16 November 2007

This page is for discussion of stuff related to the game coming up this week, no matter when that actually is. For instance, we can all assume Nate isnt coming for some lame reason and that Ed is sick of pizza and is bringing teriyaki or some other crap. They can post something here if that happens to be untrue.

--Edmiao 17:09, 14 November 2007 (MST) present, no pizza.

GABE: Present~ Looks like I'll be playing through my normal life according to the title of this adventure.

--Edmiao 17:09, 14 November 2007 (MST) any interest in 6pm-7pm magic games again?

BEN: sure

GABE: I'm going to try to, but I might end up being there at 7.

--Jason 10:59, 15 November 2007 (MST)I will be there as soon as I am done with the doctor. I will make every attempt to remember to bring my magic decks too.

Ranting and raving or other random comments

GABE: Ed, could you repost that link to the Mircosoft thingy?

--Edmiao 22:39, 12 November 2007 (MST) [1]

GABE: Man, next week I only work Monday, I took Tues and Wed off so I have all the rest of the week off. I just have to say it here, FUCK YEAH!

Other Non-RPG gaming Events

BEN: EDIT: well, the guy with the cards emailed me back, so I'll hopefully be able to pick them up. I guess we'll just split them up, although this is predicated on everyone pitching in equally: if people want to "give what they can" then I think it will be simplest just to maintain them as a general pool. If we split them up, I think rares and uncommons should be distributed randomly, and anyone can have any commons they want on a first come, first served basis (with the understanding that you won't take more than 4 of any given card). Those are my 2 cents anyways. The collection costs $90.00, so if Gabe, Ed, Dieter, and I all pitch in, that would be 22.50 each. If Matt and/or brandon wants to pitch in, the cost would come down (obviously).

--Gdaze-- So I got my shipment of magic cards the other day, almost all are from the 2 sets that are all about "techie" cards, like artifacts. Some of these artifacts are great, even more so for multi-colored decks. Some nice ones I know off the top of my head but not their names...

Artifact, 3 casting cost, tap to add one mana of any color. (Yowza!)
Lots of little 2 or 3 mana casting cost artifact creatures that can add varios colored mana to your pool.
A white spell instant, I think a 3 casting cost total, that converts all damage done to you by one creature into life points.
A green INSTANT that costs two green mana and adds 6 life to yourself.

Haha, wow Ben, I had just deleted all this stuff, lucky not until you posted that! Yeah I'm down, I would even be fore giving out the commons randomly, you can make good decks with the most basic of cards. Count me in. I mean with 5000 fucking cards we there is no way we will be unable to not take more then four of a certain card haha. I am for the we all pitch in equally, makes things easier.

ALSO, BEN, these cards are all in English, correct?

--Edmiao 11:27, 14 November 2007 (MST) Ha! I emailed that guy yesterday and asked if he would be up in seattle any time soon. he said that he had an interested party coming over but if that fell through, his wife lives in ballard and i could pick them up from her. are you the competing interested party, ben? if so, we could save a trip to tacoma by just meeting up with his wife. To simplify things, if we want to divvy the cards up, that's fine, alternately I'm willing to buy the whole lot and we can then just have my set plus the 5,000 and not have to worry about set mixing.

--Gdaze-- Eh, lets just divy it out, I'm SURE we can all make neat decks. Heck I only have about 2000 cards yet I made two pretty good/fun decks.

Plus I want me some more cards for if I have people over who want to play, haha. Even 3 ways that is like 1600 something cards per person, that an insane amount. And actually with Dieter, you, me, and Ben it comes out to 1250 cards each, nice eh?

BEN: I'm fine with one person buying them, saves me some cash and keeps them all in a pool for anyone to use. Ed has volunteered, but if you really want to divy them up gabe, then we can still do that.

--Dieter the Bold 16:40, 14 November 2007 (MST) I don't actually care if I "own" any cards. I'm just saying I'm happy to contribute to some group property that everyone can use and enjoy.

--Gdaze-- Eh sure thing then, sounds like just me and Ed are gonna jump in for paying on them then? I really don't need all, maybe just 2000 or something? I'll but in like 40 bucks, sound good Ed? But if everyone wants comunal I guess I can be down with that...

BEN: well, nevermind then. We'll just split it 4 ways. 22.50 each, rares and uncommons will be randomly divided up.

--Edmiao 17:09, 14 November 2007 (MST) we'll see if he has them pre-separated. otherwise, it will be harder than even Gabe's mom likes it to dig through and figure out which are rare out of 5000 cards. we'll work something out.

--Gdaze-- Oh wow, just cause I said I'd like to have some cards everyone goes that way? Heh heh, I was okay with either really but as a collecter I just want me some stuff!

BEN: i'll email him now and let him know you are going to pick up the cards, Ed.

--Edmiao 11:27, 15 November 2007 (MST) sweet. i look forward to trying out some of your decks.

--Jason 11:40, 15 November 2007 (MST)I may only have two decks made, but I have lots of deck skeletons. I could use some Rukh Eggs and Hell's Caretaker's to complete one idea.

--Edmiao 11:48, 15 November 2007 (MST) nice combo. but it doesn't compare to my zombie squirrel a pult deck (squirrel nest, unnatural selection, deadapult). Maybe i should buy those cards and try to remake that deck. actually, i think it never worked very well but it was freakin cool when it worked. the other one was Pure Reflection and Spirit Mirror plus Unnautral Selection.

--Jason 12:10, 15 November 2007 (MST)The key to HC/RE is its infinitely sustainable. There are also lots of other types of dudes in there, giant black creatures that have casting penalties that you dont have to pay if they come from your graveyard etc.

--Gdaze-- Did you know that if you use the regenerate ability you have to tap the creature? I had totally forgotten about that.

--Jason 12:44, 15 November 2007 (MST)Yes, I pointed that out last time I was there. A lot of Magic's rules have gotten better, while another portion have gotten worse. Overall its one of the greatest games ever devised, yet it is also extremely frustrating.

--Edmiao 13:05, 15 November 2007 (MST) if we play with ben's CoP deck again we are going to have to review the combat damage and damage prevention rules because timing can be critical, as we saw with that one game with mana barbs.

--Gdaze-- Yeah, personally I like what they did with "the stack", and getting rid of interrupts. I think any game with that many rules and cards is gonna be frusrating. I was looking over the Protection rules just today, and yeah the timing is what can be the most confusing for me.

--Edmiao 13:14, 15 November 2007 (MST)playing magic online made the rules seem much simpler. they did a good job on that, except for the part where you have to buy virtual cards with real money.

--Gdaze-- Yeah really, just charge a monthly fee? And uh... how to fight everyone just taking the bestest cards? Maybe you can pick a few rares and uncommons, and the rest are random, although you can specifiy color? At the end of a month you get new cards?

--Edmiao 13:43, 15 November 2007 (MST) i don't know if they changed anything, but in the start it was buy a booster pack and get random cards, just like in real life. then you could trade with people. I wasn't going to pay all that money for virtual cards. I think maybe there was a mechanism to cash them in for real cards, but I forget exactly. all that said, it was the most fun i've had playing magic. but of course, i had complete sets of 4 of every available rare, which was cool. and the ability to instantly get into games with folks was great.

--Jason 13:49, 15 November 2007 (MST)For timing and damage the key is to know what phase it is and do things in order. Dont get impatient. Before you attack, declare your attack phase. If you arent going to attack, or if you might attack, declare your attack phase. Use the cards to physically illustrate the stack if necessary. When I was playing Dieter last time something he thought was fishy happened, but its understandable if you follow the phases.

1. He casts an enchantment on a creature of his. 2. I respond by unsommoning that creature.

So now he wants to spend the mana on the enchantment to bring it to his hand. I tell him he cant, but he can with the one already on the creature. The reason is that card is never in play, when its target is removed it fizzles. This is true of any spell.

Also remember that there are two effects that happen at 'faster than interrupt' speed. Nothing can stop them. These effects are tapping land for mana (or anything designated mana source) and sacrifice. For instance, if a spell has a sacrifice in its casting cost, that sacrifice occurs even if the spell fizzles or is countered. The exception would be if it says 'when comes in to play' (because this is not casting cost, but a penalty) on the card.

Another key is your mana pool empties at the end of every phase. This means that when your attack phase begins you take mana burn for any unused mana in your mana pool even though you may have a main phase after your attack phase as well.

Another possibly dicey area is the upkeep phase. The active player may do his effects in any order he chooses unless specifically stated beginning or end on the card. Other players may react or cast instants during any upkeep, just remember to keep the stack in mind.

And, finally, any 'must' actions are always retroactive. Players may ignore 'may' actions if they get forgotten, but not 'must' actions. In other words, if you have 9 cards in your hand, and you didnt draw them since your last end phase, you have to discard 2 of them as soon as this is discovered.

I know its way ghetto, but the reason they did that with virtual cards is, if people can play for free that reduces the sales of real cards. There actually is a magic program you can get that has all the cards in it for free. I think I have it on my computer somewhere. There are servers everywhere. You can do lots of deck testing and everything else. Its a great program.

--Edmiao 13:54, 15 November 2007 (MST) well put with all the above. I'd love to get the link for that free program if you remember the name of it! tre cool.

GABE: So there is a type of card that can cause a sub-game to happen??? Thats insane. If anyone gets those and uses them I will stab you.

--Jason 15:08, 15 November 2007 (MST)The only one I know of is Scheherazade, and its a U2 from Arabian Nights, so its not exactly cheap.

GABE AGAIN YEHAW!: So with regeneration, if you used a instant spell to regenerate a creature, the creature would still tap, correct?

Also Ed you were right on protection. Actualy even MORE so. If a creature has protection from a color it can't be affected by any abilities, spells, instants from that color. All enchantments or equipment are removed if they match the color, and it takes no damage when blocking but, it also can't BE BLOCKED by that color. I don't think we did that last one, last time, did we? So protection is a dirty dirty power.

--76.164.21.217 11:27, 16 November 2007 (MST)Using a card to regenerate a creature does tap them if it says regenerate instead of reduce all damage to zero or prevent damage.
