Cold & Dark

Cold & Dark is a game about horror science fiction. The big emptiness of space is a place that should be explored, but the dangers are extreme, incomprehensible and horrifying. To a certain degree, the universe in C&D is a lonely and empty one. Sure, the cities in the core systems are shining beacons of technological advancement and civilization. But this is a society where everyone has their place and the government monitors every move. Only outside it, in the vast emptiness of space can you attain true freedom. Yet this, too, has its price. The great black can drive you mad, while dangers known and unknown can rend your soul and body to shreds.

The general setting for this game is like that of the Alien-series and contains horror similar to Event Horizon and Dead Space. Humanity now lives in the Sirius galaxy, has had contact with only two alien species: the advanced yet enigmatic Gerion and the mindless Rippers (basically this), and is being hemmed inside by a mysterious barrier. You also have the fun tropes of resource desperation & wars, strange Precursor artifacts and cool nanotech gear/weapons.

Mechanics

Stats exist as do a limited list of Skills. You roll d10s equal to your Stat + Skill (or Base Stat (untrained) or 2xStat (reactions)) with Target Number 7. Modifiers increase or decrease dice rolled, never the Target Number.

Damage is a base number plus X times Successes. Eg., Combat Rifle does 6 +3 per success.

Lost Redemption

The one-shot will have the players taking the roles of a tight-knit group of "former" pirates on a salvage mission at the very farthest edge of the galaxy. Characters are fully pre-genned and there is room for 5 players, but we could go down to as few as 3. My preference is a full 5. We would also watch this on Netflix Streaming beforehand (74 minutes), to get people in the mood.

Sandbox Level: 2- There is a goal and all the pieces are already in place, but the Players have some choice of where to go within the setting and how to react to various encounters.
Action Level: 5- There will be blood. TPK is entirely within the realm of possibility.
