This page is for discussion of stuff related to the game coming up this week, no matter when that actually is. For instance, we can all assume Nate isnt coming for some lame reason and that Ed is sick of pizza and is bringing teriyaki or some other crap. They can post something here if that happens to be untrue.

To be less, as both Ed and I described it, verbose, Dieter is moving in with some friends of his at the end of August. Thank you) (DIETER: Awwww.... I was hoping for a few eruptions of confusion and fear before clearing it all up. Spoilsport).
BEN "spoilsport": sorry. I thought you might be, but then I decided that clearing up fear and confusion on the wiki would take up like 5 pages of text.

6/13/08

Today's Game: Spoil Sport

--Edmiao 08:46, 11 June 2008 (MST) I'm down. I want to play a character that is thematically based on you mother. no pizza for me.

--Dieter the Bold 10:50, 11 June 2008 (MST) Definitely down, pizza please. No movies, so I'll be home whenever.

--Gdaze-- Cool, cool. I'll try my best to be there around 6 or 6:30ish. I've actually been organizing my magic cards so I gonna see if I can't make some spiffy decks. I hope you guys will like the one shot, it is just to give us a break after finishing such a major part in Werewolf, I'd also like everyone to be present for the next part. Look for some emails or posts on here about who you will be playing.

Ranting and raving or other random comments

JASON: Daria has survived her surgery and is doing fine. Now lets hope the tumor is not cancerous.

--Gdaze 19:48, 9 June 2008 (MST) Good to hear!

--Edmiao 09:13, 10 June 2008 (MST) hope she is feeling better. where was it?

JASON: I went to visit her yesterday and she gave me the cold shoulder, but she looks healthy. I am not sure what where you mean, so the surgery was at South Seattle Veterinary Hospital, the tumor was rectum/lower colon. The doc said he had never seen one in this particular area.

--Edmiao 09:19, 10 June 2008 (MST) colon cancer? blech. how did they find it? was she losing weight or something?

JASON: Actually she was gaining weight. Lots of it. Her entire colon and possibly even further were so backed up she couldnt move waste. The mass was in the way and caused her to strain so much her prolapse recurred. Her midsection was giant and very hard.

--Dieter the Bold 14:47, 11 June 2008 (MST) Also best wishes for swift recovery and lack of relapse.

Other RPG or Non-RPG gaming Events

Monthly Board Gaming Day

--Gdaze-- Well if anyone is interested in some Heroscape let me know in advance.

JASON: This Saturday I am having a BBQ/Spodie/Karaoke event starting around 4. We will be making steak and shrimp fajitas as well as BBQing any requests people have. This will also include Karaoke Revolution and Singstar for the PS2 (which are WAY more fun than they sound at first). Everyone and all of their significant others are invited. Hopefully the weather helps us!

KIM: Shrimps?! What a bummer, I'm shooting Saturday night, and may be dragging Ben along with me... or we can snap him like a wishbone? Either way, sounds like fun, hope the weather cooperates!!!

JASON: There is always before and/or after. Dont forget, I have guns, you could shoot those instead. Wait. What are you shooting?

--Dieter the Bold 14:48, 11 June 2008 (MST) I have 3 SIFF movies on Saturday, so I'm afraid I'm booked the entire day. I may go shooting on Friday, though, at Wade's Eastside over in Bellevue, if you're interesetd. It depends on how hung over I am from our Thursday night drinking event.

BEN: She's shooting PICTURES, you violent freaks. Model/Actress and all, ya know? Bunch a' poster children for the "positive" effects of gaming...yeesh.

--Edmiao 15:59, 11 June 2008 (MST) who let Jason buy guns????? crazy. and are they actually going to let deiter fire guns???? crazier.

JASON: Fun fact: You dont have to register to buy a rifle. Muahahaha

--Dieter the Bold 20:04, 11 June 2008 (MST) I also just discovered this a couple weeks ago, to my surprise. What kind of rifles? .22 is allowed inside Wade's, but we'll have to go up to Kenmore for anything bigger. It's outdoors, non-mechanical (break ~30 minutes to switch targets, and only 1 round in a clip, except .22s). Plans are for handguns at Wade's, but we've got a team drinking event tomorrow night, so I don't know if I'll actually be up for it. We'll see. Hangover plus handguns make for a Darwinian combination.

JASON: I have two antique Mauser rifles. One is an 1891 Argentinian Carbine and the other is an 1893 Spanish long rifle. Both are 7mm.

KIM: Yeah, um, not quite the sorta shooting I had plans for... and those plans last for lots and lots of hours. PS: I bribed Ben for his attendance with the offer of pizza. TRUMP!

--Gdaze 02:05, 13 June 2008 (MST) Pizza... huh? That said, why are all of my friends so into guns suddenly...

--Edmiao 09:30, 13 June 2008 (MST) I, too, am somewhat perturbed by this.

JASON: Just think of it this way, when the shit hits the fan, we will be saving your candy asses. In other news, I have only put a bullet in one of my guns once, and just one bullet. I took it out immediately after the situation was resolved. I have, however, fired other peoples guns numerous times.

--Edmiao 12:58, 13 June 2008 (MST) why would you put a bullet in a classic rifle like that, and what situation ??? maybe i don't want to know.

Weekly Magic Whining/Complaining/Smack Talking

BEN: a nice draft tonight (saturday) for myself, Ed, Cheryl, and Brandon) Brandon and I went 1-2, and Ed and Cheryl each went 2-1. There was some interest expressed for something tomorrow, and I had a good enough time to draft again or to just play with the decks we have tomorrow night. let me know if you want to do something.

--Edmiao 21:07, 8 June 2008 (MST)It was fun, but i still prefer constructed. there's more depth of deck building and I think the draft thing gets a bit spendy.

--Brandon 00:15, 9 June 2008 (MST) Speaking of which, I realized that I made you give me too much money, Ed. It should have been $5 each, rather than $7.50, because we only had 2 boosters each, not 3. I'll give you $5 the next time I see you. I'm generally against spending too much on Magic cards, but draft is fun enough for me to spend a little bit on the event. I probably won't do it for a while, though. We've got enough new cards to have fun with for a bit.

BEN: I really like draft. I might even go to the eventide pre-release to play in a real draft (ie, get my ass kicked in a...). I feel like it makes for tight play, and really forces you to think about your game, because its rare that one deck is just overwhelmingly superior to the other. Speaking of constructed, I think its time I made a deck for when I'm emperor...

--Edmiao 09:14, 9 June 2008 (MST) are you saying you plan to make a control deck???!!! gasp

BEN: oh yes, my precious...

JASON: Draft is more about your skill as a magic player (rather than deck builder, though thats very important as well) I think. You need to be able to play whatever cards you have, which is often more difficult than devising a strategy and sticking to it. I like it too. If it werent for Daria's impending surgery I would have tried a lot harder to come this weekend, I am starting to get the magic itch again. I also miss all of the other interesting formats like make the worst deck, singletons, 3 cost or less, rainbow, etc.

GABE: I'd love to use more itnereting formats, like everything costs 3 or less, be tight. Anyone wanna try for one this Friday? Hope Daria is okay!

--Edmiao 09:13, 10 June 2008 (MST) i think some themed things like that would be fun.

GABE: Any ideas for this Friday then?

BEN: my one problem is that I definitely don't have time to make constructed theme decks: just to make a regular old functional constructed deck that I can keep around and tweek to make it good takes several hours for me to make, usually. So to spend that on a deck that will get taken apart at the end of a two hour play session...at least with sealed or draft, it takes you 45min-1hr to make a deck. But if we come up with something where we can make decks on the spot, I'm in fo' sho. Otherwise I'm cool with just playing some regular games.

Gabe: I don't think we need to put in too much thought, just force us to play with cards we might never use. But it does take time to make decks regardless.

--Edmiao 11:12, 10 June 2008 (MST) agreed. plus all the cards are at bens and we only want to play for an hour or so, so i would suggest no drafting or contstucting on fridays. if we want to do some themed thing we should go for an afternoon of it, or on some day when rpg are cancelled.

GABE: I'll cancel your face.

--Edmiao 11:25, 10 June 2008 (MST) might be hard with it burried in your mom. can't breath.....

GABE: Oh SNAP! (Is it pretty clear I'm tired at work and really don't feel like working?)

BEN: you were ALL WRONG:

Will Spirit Link on a creature that kills itself as a result of doing damage (such as Hammerfist Giant) grant life to its controller?

A: Yes, as the Spirit Link will be in play when damage is actually dealt. It does not matter that the Spirit Link will soon leave play after state-based effects are checked. (Technically, when they are checked a second time. The first time they are checked the Giant will leave play, and then immediately after they are checked again.)

I got to thinking about this when I read some rules on WOTC recently about a spell called "fiery justice" which, if you target a player with it at 5 or less life, won't actually kill them (card does 5 damage to one creature or player, then gives one player 5 life). State based effects are checked AFTER all the parts of a spell are resolved. So with the bloodfire colossus it says sacrifice, then deal 6 damage...so the colossus doesn't "know" its dead until both effects resolved, when state based effects are checked. When the damage is dealt, the vampiric link/spirit link are still in play, so their effects go off. That deck just got 2x as nasty again >:).

--Gdaze 22:03, 12 June 2008 (MST) Here is a fun one then. You trigger off the exploding giant while I have my Fortune Thief on, you know that annoying bitch? But she has false demise on her, so she comes back... so would I contine to be in game?

BEN: actually, even if the explosion reduces you to zero, the fortune thief doesn't die until all the damage has been assigned, so his ability still protects you.

--Edmiao 09:29, 13 June 2008 (MST) sorry ben, you are still wrong. this works for hammerfist giant but not for bloodfire collosus. the difference is Hammerfist: Tap to do damage to everything. then hammer takes it's own damage and dies after the damage is dealt, so spirit link is in play when the hammerfist does the damage. Bloodfire: Sacrifice to do damage. sacrifice is a cost, Bloodfire leaves play before the damage is dealt. And that is what i said the first time around.

JASON: Also, even though I dont know these particular cards, sacrifice happens immediately and faster than interrupt speed. It never goes on the stack and nothing can be done in response to it.

--Edmiao 12:59, 13 June 2008 (MST) the situation under debate is: Bloodfire colussus enchanted by Spirit Link. Bloodfire is a 6/6 creature that has this ability: R, sacrifice: do 6 damage to each creature and each player. does spirit link work? i say no, bloodfire is gone before the damage goes off, or even goes into the stack.

BEN: I looked in the 146 page rule manual, and I think, once again, that you are right, Ed. there are a bunch of steps you do before an activated ability goes off, and one is pay the cost. So presumably, the cost resolves before the ability. Although I would also say that the situation gets much more complicated if the card says "bloodfire colossus deals..."

--Edmiao 14:03, 13 June 2008 (MST) I don't think that matters. prodigal sorc deals 1 damage to target, respond with terror. resolve the stack, terror goes off, sorc leaves play, then the sorc effect does one damage to target desptie the fact that he is gone.

--Gdaze 15:59, 13 June 2008 (MST) Uh wait, can't you unsummon a creature before someone sacrifices it?' Wait wait? I thought if you terrored a tim he gets killed, and thus his affect never goes off? I mean you kill him before he taps?

--Edmiao 16:53, 13 June 2008 (MST)you can never ever prevent a cost from being paid. Costs inclued: Tap, mana, sacrifice. thus you can never prevent a tim from tapping nor a bloodfire from sacrificing itself. example: Terror bloodfire, in response sacrifice bloodfire, and terror fizzles. example: icy manipulator to the Tim, in response tim taps to do 1 damage, icy fizzles. ben hates this mechanic, but still icy manipulator is one of the best all around cards in the game.

JASON: One other way to think of this is that an effect does not begin to resolve until all of its costs are paid. First pay, then resolve. In the above example the Icy Manipulator does not fizzle because it still has a legal target and that target is tapped, it just doesnt make any further difference. Icy is a good card, but not nearly as used as it once was. The 4 cost is kinda high. I have like 6 of them, since they reprinted in Darksteel and Ice Age, but I never put them in decks. I always think of it, though. Back in the day it was one of my favorite cards. I was really disappointed when they reprinted it in Ice Age because the original art was so nice.

Next step in Super Heroes

--Matts 14:48, 7 June 2008 (MST)My preference at this point is to start supers at the next session I run, since momentum on WFRP is low at the moment, and I'm personally more excited to start something new than to have a few lame-duck sessions of WFRP.

So this bumps up the timetable a bit, but if characters aren't totally done by the 20th, we can just run play out some prologues as we finish up the characters.

KIM: So I just figured out how this damn page works, and finally found the secret scroll of supers lore. Geesh. Seems general consensus is cool with me hopping on-board so (barring a nay-say from Matt) I will put some time into building a backstory for my character, and bat my pretty eyes at Ben to help me with the sheet. As my fav characters are Batman and Marvel Girl, I'll likely feel most comfortable channeling a bit of the two, so expect brainy but moody, and the occasional surprise kick-ass-ness.

--Gdaze 22:40, 11 June 2008 (MST) So will your name be Batmarvel? No wait... MARVELBAT! Marvel girl is pretty cool though.

--Edmiao 09:52, 12 June 2008 (MST) so we still need to integrate Gabe, Kim and Deiter and maybe Jason's characters into our Super Heroes Wiki-Prologue? Or should we just have everyone meet on session one, as the wiki-prologue is not making much progress as of yet.

KIM: So I built the concept of my character to somewhat fit into the picture, so if she may have interacted with other heroes in backstory, they may not have been aware of her abilities, but she knows about them. Try this on for size: by day, a famous actress (gives her money for cool gadgetry a la Bruce Wayne, and easily puts her in NY) who is also a UN Goodwill Ambassador (a la Angelina Jolie, and can put her in Iraq around the time that everyone else is there). As an ambassador, she's clearly empathetic, savvy, and excels at communication... so, powers to heal, telepathy, telekinesis perhaps, but as she's a woman AND and actress (true to form) when her powers are drained she's moody and goes into PMS mode (hoping to incorporate the Phoenix here). Feedback, anyone?
