Michael 'Tiptop' Pierson is the Sergeant Major in charge of Prime Team Alpha on the USS Niven. He graduated high school at the top of his class at the prestigious San Francisco Academy and went on to attend Starfleet Academy. He was active in forensics, gymnastics and other team athletics. Just before his junior year the Romulan War broke out, and he brashly left the academy to enlist in the marines. This infuriated his mother, who was a Rear Admiral in the JAG Corps.

Notable Actions

He was deployed with his team to secure a landing area near Intrusion Detection Installation B inside the Romulan Neutral Zone during Where Has All The Glory Gone?. His team was ambushed by a small contingent of heavily armed soldiers, but they were able to secure the landing area and take the remaining staff as prisoners. Four members of his team were killed.

Eulogy

During the funeral services Sergeant Major Pierson gave the final eulogy for the fallen men. An excerpt of which follows.

'We are all in a difficult place right now. Resist the urge to look down your noses at our enemies. I know not their motives, and nor do I care. In the words of Alfred Lord Tennyson, 'Ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do and die', of course he was speaking more about the orders of his superiors, it is also relevant to consider the orders of their superiors. But there is more to it than that.

'Kendall, Simmons, Jorgenson and McManus were volunteers. They volunteered for the marines. They volunteered for Prime Team and they volunteered for this mission. They chose to be there. These men were not volunteers because they were stone cold killers, or because they loved war, or because they were hooked on some adrenaline rush the action brought to them. They were volunteers because they knew this job was hard, they knew this job was dangerous, and likewise they knew they were the ones who could do it. They were volunteers because they loved freedom and the Federation, and they loved doing whatever job was necessary to protect them for us all.

'As many of you know, Lance Corporal McManus has a son who was 3 days old when we left port. Hes a beautiful little guy. But that little man is going to grow up without his daddy and we owe him something. We owe him the honor of knowing his father sacrificed his life on a mission of vital importance to the Federation and the freedom of its citizens against a strong and determined enemy. I respect those Romulans because I respect Corporal Harry Kendall, Sergeant Fitzhugh Simmons, Private Lorena Jorgenson and Lance Corporal Steven McManus. And I respect those Romulans because I respect little Pierson McManus.'
