Revision as of 16:53, 13 November 2008

This page is for discussion of stuff related to the game coming up this week, no matter when that actually is. For instance, we can all assume Nate isnt coming for some lame reason and that Ed is sick of pizza and is bringing teriyaki or some other crap. They can post something here if that happens to be untrue.

Attendance and Food Preference

11/14/08

--Dieter the Bold 12:42, 11 November 2008 (MST) Present. Down for pizza.

Gabe: Most likely there. My mom is making me a cake and told me I should bring it to gaming. So enjoy fuckers!

--Brandon 16:53, 12 November 2008 (MST) Dude, your mom already "made me a cake." Actually, that's really nice of your mom. I might never be able to make fun of her ever again.

Gabe: Phff, and Ed may win a game of magic in under 15 turns!

Edmiao ha, not gonna happen. can't wait to indulge in your mom's cake. present, no pizza as usual.

Edmiao ben, help me remember that i owe you $2.

Ranting and raving or other random comments

JASON: To all of you Heroscape playin' jokers, I got a line on a Rise of the Valkyries box that I was thinking of buying. Is that any good?

Gabe: It is a fun game, though you need a lotta space to have a board set up. Or just make smaller boards. I'm trying to come up with some sort of game you could play where you are actually fighting over real terrotories. Another probelm is that some units just plain suck and aren't worth the time to be used.

Other RPG or Non-RPG or Monthly Board Gaming Day gaming Events

BEN: an idea I have been tossing around, and that I may or may not try to pursue in the next couple of months, is a schedule-less game. What I mean is: a game in which the group doesn't meet at a specific, recurring time, but just agrees, via wiki, when the next session will be...the next day, five days from then, a month from then. The game only takes place when everyone can attend. I envision this as a small game (3-4 players), using a system with a very strong narrativist streak. I have no idea yet what genre I would want to set this in, but I think it would be something with a lot of politicking and intra- and inter-character RPing and development, with a plot driven almost exclusively by the players, significant cause-effect consequences, etc (what Gemini was supposed to be, basically...I understand that this doesn't sound appealing to many, but it is a game type I still really want to explore). As such, it would probably be something like "Vampire: the masquerade" (possibly using Sabbat characters), "Hunters hunted" (White wolf mortals) or something similar if I used a published setting, or "City of Tears", "Black Sun, White Moon" or something similar if home-brewed.
Anyways, if you or someone you know would want to be part of something like this (this would NOT in any way impact friday games, obviously, which are still my primary gaming priority), just send me an email. If there's sufficient interest, and I decide that I have time/motivation to make this happen, I'll let interested parties know how it may go down, and make a new page on the wiki here for it. BEN: I think if I ran this game, it would likely be set in the world of "the league of extraordinary gentlemen" (the comic, not the movie).

GABE: Even though I would most likely be unable to join this, what about that one system/world you got? The one about the family who like use to rule the world, and now the brother controls it? That seems like a fairly heavy RP system.

BEN: Lesser shades of evil? That's a good idea. It can definitely go on the list. I guess the main thing will be what genre I want to run. My favorite RPG genre is fantasy, but I've already got that one covered. So I want to think about what other genres I haven't hit satisfactorily in the past. I'd consider doing a game set in Gemini again, like 20 years later after all the shit you guys did leads to the formation of a new fascist Regime in the distant system and the outbreak of a system-wide cold war.

Edmiao friday gaming is my max for ditching cheryl, i think. so i'm out.

Nate here: I don't know how long this has been up, but I would definitely be down for a Vampire game. Obviously I can really only do weekends so it would have to be on a sat. or sunday, but let me know if it would work out.

--Dieter the Bold 13:06, 3 November 2008 (MST) Just picked up The Burning Wheel over the weekend and am reading through it. Was highly recommended by a panel at PAX and I'm liking what I'm reading so far. So far I'm getting a "Dogs in the Vineyard" feel for it, but with a Cyberpunk-style system backing it up. Should I continue liking it all the way through the GM's and Player's guides, I will run a one-shot. Of some kind.

JASON: Anyone up for a game day either this Saturday or the first weekend in December?

--Dieter the Bold 12:42, 11 November 2008 (MST) I'd be down.

BEN: Quantum of Solace. Saturday, the 15th. 10:30 AM. Cinerama. Nuff said.

Weekly Magic Whining/Complaining/Smack Talking

Shards of Alara

Elder Dragon Highlander Rules

BEN: brandon, I pulled 2 unmakes from your white weenie deck for my black deck: if you go back to playing that deck, let me know and I will return them.

--Brandon 12:04, 12 November 2008 (MST) That's fine. I was just thinking that the next thing I will do is re-work that deck. But, that won't happen for quite a while. And, even when it does, I might not need those unmakes. I'm not sure, though, that I want those cards in your ever-nastier black deck ; ).

BEN: I think I've decided to add another parameter to the black deck, which is "no more than 4 direct removal spells" (like terror, dark banishing, executioner's capsule, etc.), so I think one of the unmakes may come out (either that or lingering death, depending on where my curve is at right now). things like drain life, corrupt, and engineered plague (which will be one of my new, fun-but-really-nasty additions) don't count, since they aren't "removal" per se. I just think that our casual metagame is so heavily dominated by removal that it's not really surprising that the black deck does well when it has 8 or 10 pieces of it.

--Brandon 13:53, 12 November 2008 (MST) Do I remember correctly that we actually have that Kithkin Knight who gives all knights double-strike? Or were you just talking about that card in general?

JASON: I traded one of those to Ben, so yes, you have one. Also, I think limiting yourself to 4 removal spells is a bad idea.

BEN: well, it certainly decreases the straight up "power" of the deck, but it also opens things up for alternative, interesting solutions

Edmiao i agree, lots of creature removal makes a deck more powerful, more effective, but sometimes less fun to play. the terror...the terror...the terror

GABE: Or LARP style, lightening bolt, lightening bolt! That said, I was thinking, and I've come to the conclusion that Electrolyze is a freaking nasty card, at least it is uncommon. I mean one red, one blue, one colorless, you can do 2 damage among target(s!) and draw a card...

Edmiao electrolyze is a dirty dirty dirty card. but with lightning bolt around for one red and three damage, can't complain too much. now what's not a dirty card is needle drop. but it's freakin annoying when an opponent (like me) plays it. I have to say that game last week with Eye of the Storm was my favorite game of magic ever.

JASON: Someone needs to play a creatureless deck or two, that will reduce the number of removal spells. I have been thinking of making one lately.

Edmiao i had a great black creatureless deck for a bit. really fun.

GABE: True, nothing beats ol'lightening bolt. If I'm on your team and you play Eye of the Storm again, I'm so countering that shit.

I have this really interesting card "Counter target spell, that spell's controller puts a creature from his hand into play." It'd be interesting in two headed giant, but it costs 4 mana...

JASON: Heck, with that you need to be countering your own spells! Sol Ring, turn 1, turn 2 counter a Zuran Orb and put Akroma into play. Game.over

Edmiao that would be awesome. and only a pussy would counter eye of the storm.

BEN: I think Team America's "Dicks, Pussies, and Assholes" analogy has a place at this point in the conversation. True, a pussy would counter eye of the storm. A dick would just fuck the asshole that played it in the first place. And, since that's no easy feat, that same dick would fuck the pussy who tried to counter it. And just remember, in throwing such insults around, Ed, that an asshole is just a pussy that's been fucked too much.

Edmiao I hate to get technical on you here, but if fucking an asshole is no easy feat, then how can an asshole be a pussy that's been fucked too much? would make not so many assholes around, and the world seems to be chock full of them.

Next step in Super Heroes

GABE: So I really enjoyed the last game, it had a good mix of action and lots of RP'in. Perhaps cause we had a smaller group? My favorite part is us taking out the minions in turn one. Anyway, just saying I can't wait to inflitrate that bio-tech company.

Next step in Of Amor, Armor, and Alchemy

Current OAAAA XP: 75 base + 107 XP

Stuff we want to buy:

Horses for all plus one or two as pack animals
Winter clothing and sleeping rolls
climbing gear and rope
torches and lanterns
rations
dragon repellent
picks, shovel, other digging equipment to clear cave ins? dynamite?
Ketchup (if you can't beat 'em . . .)
carrier pigeons

BEN: Well, for only three characters to go head to head with Sky was quite something. But the characters played smart and kept their actions tight and well coordinated, and victory was theirs. I'd just like to commend a few highlights, and leave it to the players to provide the summary to their fellow party members:
1.) Aefra taking down Sky with a thrown daenerys dagger...right after the MT Tithe got taken down with a 68 stun hit to the head.
2.) Aetan heaving several goblins into the abyss...or just bashing them into goblin pulp with his hammer and sending the others running in terror.
3.) Aetan diving off a bridge (!), into the abyss, after an unconscious and falling Tithe, catching him in midair with a critical success dex roll, to completely save the situation.
4.) Aefra making a cool illusory wedding band as for Grendel, to seal her marriage to him.
5.) Aetan declaring himself a vassal of Grendel.
6.) Matt prebuying luck to allow him to reroll the second of two 17 failures for a 15- roll, as an instant effect.
7.) Tithe getting dog piled by goblins and fighting his way out.

On account of numbers 1, 3, 4, and 5, but especially #3, the entire group (including Dieter, Gabe, and Nate) are awarded 1 bonus XP.
Additionally: Matt and Ed: I think that your purchased disadvantages came into play last session, so you each get the bonus from that as well.

--Gdaze -- Jeez, seems the group got a hard-on for Grendel. So is the group ever going to run into people we don't bow down and kiss their ass sometimes?

Edmiao I'm going out on a limb here.... no?

BEN: have you met anyone you particularly didn't like where it would have been beneficial to be bellicose towards them? Other than the establishment back on Caminus? Or the knight of flowers? Or the ninja orc?

--Brandon 11:18, 20 October 2008 (MST) I was going to say, though Ben has partially stolen my thunder, that I think we have established a pretty good balance between ass-kissing and ass-kicking:

Some members of Caminus establishment: kissed
Other members of said establishment: tricked/kicked
Bandits: kicked
Gwyndolin: kissed
Dragon: neither (we just ran and ran)
Ape: kicked
Knight of Flowers: kicked
Folks in Carthay: intermittent kissing
Wood Elves: stayed respectfully aloof
Ninja Orc: got kicked, then kicked
Grendel: kissed (literally)
Dragon (second time): I predict a prodigious amount of ass-kissing here

--Gdaze -- Yeah, but didn't this guy threaten us/Aefra to marry him? (Is this guy the goblin king or is that someone else?, also Fantus just doesn't like his friends being forced to do things they won't want.)

BEN: he didn't actually threaten the group at all. He had an attitude similar to the knight of flowers, really (kind of a lot of similarities, now that I think about it), except that he never hurt any member of the group (he did have the stone grab tithe's head, but it didn't hurt him...). He made requests of the group, and when they expressed reservations about the marrying thing, he got upset, explained why he was upset (the faeries chased him out as a child because he was ugly, and it nearly killed him several times), and offered the group the opportunity to just go along their merry way without doing any of his tasks, but that he would then take that as an indicator that even the best among the fae (ie, Aefra and Aetan) were nothing more than self serving, callous beings who would never respect him, and that this conclusion would lead him to join the wood elves in their war against the fae.

Edmiao yeah, so he was pretty nice about the whole thing, except for the threat of race war on your kind forevermore.

BEN: which really, when you think about it, ain't no thang. Sounds like a pretty reasonable guy, doesn't he?

Edmiao that's what i said, glad to be married to him

--Gdaze -- Totally, like a cute Hitler. I wish someone would have said "Well maybe you shouldn't have been so ugly." Although, awesome rebellion by Aefra "Look who I married dad!"

--Brandon 14:52, 20 October 2008 (MST) Ummmm, I know history is written by the victors and all, but since when is being hit hard enough to be knocked unconscious, begin bleeding to death, and be knocked off of a bridge so as to fall to one's death (barring miraculous salvation at the hands of a lucky, impulsive, clever troll) considered "not being hurt?"

--Gdaze -- How dare you speak ill of Aefra's husband and the one who hold's Aten's leash. I mean, you got better right?

--Brandon 15:08, 20 October 2008 (MST) Lolz. Yeah, if by "got better" you mean that I was healed by the smooth and silky touch of Galen's hands. Luckily, he picked just that moment to stop running repeatedly into the wall and actually do something productive.

BEN: good point. I guess he did hurt somebody. Just not somebody important. Besides, you were about to kill one more of his precious goblins (who continued to kill one another, on accident, while he was hanging around).
