Surprise!  I have an idea
As of now we have a few possibilities here.  Dieter wants to see a Firefly-esque game.  Matt wants something vaguely 40kish.  Ben wants to declare himself emperor for life and strut around until the ides of March.

How about if everyone posts their character ideas here, then whoever is gonna GM this train wreck can know what the participants will be and find a way to get them molded into the world, instead of shoe horning the players into their world.

--Matts 14:31, 14 February 2007 (MST)Actually I'm not that into running a 40k-ish space opera.  If I ran it it'd be closer (a lot closer) to Firefly, sort of a dingy wstern-cyberpunk-in-space.

--Jason 14:41, 14 February 2007 (MST)So we could conceivably run space Deadlands?  hehe  I have trouble wrapping my head around guys flying around in an interstellar space ship shooting each other with six-guns.  On tv they had to make those excuses to save on special effects, but if we are to have such an arrangement, the explaination better be good.

--BenofZongo 14:56, 14 February 2007 (MST)The way I've been designing my campaign, there are certain character generation rules, but that should only matter for putting a character down on paper.  In fact, the first step is "write out a character concept in 3-5 sentences", so in that sense Jason's idea fits perfectly.  Frankly, I can roll either way, since most "space opera" characters should fit.  But if players want an idea of the game world before they start submitting character concepts, you might have to wait a little bit while I scramble to put stuff together.

Gdaze- Yeah too lazy to post my nameActually I always thought they were using high velocity rounds or something due to the sound they made.  However, the fact that they weren't using semi-auto or full auto was a bit weird.  I could understand some using them, like on planets that don't have as much resources (sort of like 40k, the humans come to colonize but only use so much tech).  I don't mind gritty either, heck Gears of War is gritty and they don't have ANY energy weapons in it.  (minus the hammer of dawn)  But yes I did notice how firefly reused a lot of their props haha.  I was like didn't I see someone armed with that last week...

I guess we should all post just what kind of tech levels we'd like to see?

--Jason 15:03, 14 February 2007 (MST)Here is my concept idea: Card playin', hard drinkin', space preacher.  I envision moderate combat skills, ability to pilot a ship and drive some stuff, and a lot of carousing and preaching.

--Gdaze--It is kinda hard for me to make a character if I know nothing about the universe...  I know it is just a concept and all but I at least need to know something like the history or the general setting... besides space of course!

--Matts 15:19, 14 February 2007 (MST)Projectile weapons are cheap and lethal enough; traditional sci-fi stuff exists, but is a) expensive and b) illegal.  Nothing wrong with a good old M-16.  Ships generally aren't armed because it's illegalAt least that's what I'd do.  Hard-drinking space preachers welcome.  I've got a map and a general idea that I'll post when I have time (ie, after valentine's day).

Ben here: says the guy who is late like every session because of the poon.  I've been working on character creation, but I will switch tracks and make up a game world dealy so people can get a feel for the world I propose.  Im just going to make a wild guess here and say that chances are good that Matt's and my vision will probably share quite a few similarities, but whatever.  I'll post it when it's ready.

--Edmiao 18:35, 14 February 2007 (MST) I would need two things before making a character.  1) What is the universe like 2) What are the goals of the group.  Are there aliens, or only humans?  Are we swash buckling pirates or traders or indiana jones in space?  Does the GM want to implement Jason's idea of multiple characters for each player with only one being sent on missions per session?  Sounds like the GM will be Matt or Ben, I suggest a duel to decide the outcome.  10 paces, each man can choose his weapon.  I suspect that the weapons of choice will be: Ben with the rapid fire nerf dart shooter and Matt will be shooting ping pong balls from gabes mom.  this should be interesting indeed.

--Gdaze-- So.... so far we have a universe where trained talking seals who do my mom, dueling Matts and Bens, and dueling banjos?

--Matts 15:48, 15 February 2007 (MST)If I were to run it, the universe would be a sector of space consisting of several systems, with one or two major "space lanes" that run through them. The core systems are heavily policed, heavily controlled, and generally the kind of place you want to avoid.  The fringes are much more amenable to freedom of conduct.

It sounds like firefly because it basically is firefly.  The history is that it's an area of space that is generally cut off from other sectors - the only way in or out is through the Toko system, in the heart of the "core".  As such, the residents of the core are phenomenally wealthy, and subscribe to the 'trickle-down' theory of economics (as in, they get the money, and they don't trickle it down).
