Revision as of 18:51, 18 December 2007
This page is for discussion of stuff related to the game coming up this week, no matter when that actually is. For instance, we can all assume Nate isnt coming for some lame reason and that Ed is sick of pizza and is bringing teriyaki or some other crap. They can post something here if that happens to be untrue.

--Edmiao 15:55, 17 December 2007 (MST)I could do 6-10pm this friday
--Gdaze-- This should work for me too, I'll know for sure by tomorrow. Where at?
--Edmiao 18:28, 17 December 2007 (MST) your place? I don't think Deiter was too into magic. I'll bring ben's decks as well and mine. might as well bring the mega collection and give you some of the redundant commons if you don't have them.
--Gdaze-- My place would work very well. Maybe we can even get my brother and his g/f to play... she use to play with her brother so we'll see.
--Edmiao 10:43, 18 December 2007 (MST)I'm guessing Deiter is not interested, if you are Deiter, we could convene at BnD to save you some transport. or i could pick you up on way to gabes. Also, Gabe, we can play at my place, your brother and gf welcome of course. My brother in law is coming around 10pm, so i have to ditch out then, or if we are at my place, he can join us.
--Gdaze-- Hmm, actually the till 10 thing might work best for me. I may go with Noelle when she picks up Pam, whose flight comes in at 10:45. (Yeah... airport the Friday before Christmas, it ain't gonna be pretty) Dieter are you interested??? Oh I'm also saying my place would work best haha. Well this could be fun too, get some one on one action. Also I'm totall down for some board games anytime, I've been missing out on Seattlers. That shit was fun. (Although I was so tired by the end it was a bit tough, I'd love to start that game around five or something, but this Friday... MAGIC)
Oh and of course if Jason or Matt #2 would like to stop by you are welcomed as well.
--Edmiao 12:04, 18 December 2007 (MST) ok, your place. i want to try these decks out one on one, even if we get more players, i'd like to do some teams and some 1 vs 1 to test out how various decks do in heads up. definitely different dynamics.
--Gdaze-- Sweet. I'll say this though, Jason's and Ed's decks tend to kick a lot of ass. I'm kinda like Ben where I find cards I like and just throw them in... except in my case they don't work...
--Edmiao 12:40, 18 December 2007 (MST) you are welcome to use any deck i make if you get tired of getting your ass kicked. the goal of magic is to have good games. to this end, cheryl and i used to do 1 vs 1 and the loser got to remove a card from the winners deck, or restore a lost card to his/her deck. after a few losses, decks begin to balance out.
--Gdaze-- Ya bastard! My decks aren't bad I think I just need to shuffle more. I tend to either always get too many of card A or card B.
--Dieter the Bold 17:51, 18 December 2007 (MST) Uninterested in Magic, but totally down with any Settlers action. I'm not going out of town, so anytime outside of normal work is good.

GABE: Hey... like go look at my page and tell me what you think... do those notes make the world seem interesting? Too keechi? I'd love some input.

BEN: I'm doing one of those usability tests that Ed told us about...and I'm supposed to bring 3-7 friends next thursday, the 20th. The thing starts between 6:30 and 7, and I'm not sure how long it will run, but any/all of you are welcome to come along and/or bring friends of your own, until the seven slots are filled.
ED: how did that go?
BEN: next thursday, the 20th
BEN: looks like they aren't gonna offer me one of the $599 ones :(. But I can get powerpoint or word 2007 or vista home premium, which are still worth 240 bucks...think that guy will still be interested?
Ed: who knows. give him a call: Rex Yang 206-399-7495 rex.yang@premieresoftware.net

--Edmiao Magic Workstation. this link has a link to the download page and another link to a walkthrough. you have to download the magic workstation program and then download a card database.
BEN: man, Ed's discard deck is nasty. Dragon mage + haste + megrim = mucho paino. I was thinking that deck might be a good place for some of those 1 red mana chaos charms that give a creature haste as an instant...
ED: I had those in line for the deck, but didn't put them in. I think that should be revised, because haste on that puppy is really really really important.
BEN: absolutely. haste + megrim + Dragon Mage...that's that deck in a nutshell, and that's one hell of a combo. 19 damage if they have 7 cards in hand. it hurts just thinking about it.
funny, really, that my deck ended up being mostly direct damage as well...I never really thought of it that way, but it does sort of play out like that.
ED: cheryl and i just played ben's decks. force of nature vs the CoP red with red exploding creatures. Cheryl cast FoN on turn 3, freakin rad. then i stone rained one of her forests, the result...FoN killed her before it could kill me, hillarious. Your CoP red deck needs a few walls, though, cus the llanowar elves were killing me. I used a 5 casting cost bury on one cus i was at 3 life. maybe a few wall of stone, 0/8 to withstand the exploding red monster. in the next game i got two of them out at once and exploded them for 12 damage in one turn.
--76.164.21.217 10:36, 17 December 2007 (MST)Why waste space with a wall, just put in a creature. This just in, they block too!
--Edmiao 10:43, 17 December 2007 (MST) I like that deck, ben, it's fun. why a wall: wall of stone, RR1 0/8. vs Orc R2 2/2. Wall blocks infinite times, Orc blocks once. now let fly the giant in the deck that deals 6 damagae to all creatures on the board. Wall survives, orc dies. who needs a 2/2 creature when your deck relies on summoning a 6/6 giant that explodes.
--76.164.21.217 11:13, 17 December 2007 (MST)Try picking a creature that doesnt suck. The wall does not contribute to victory, it only delays a loss. Any creature that can attack (or has a special ability) potentially contributes to victory. Heck, for RR2 you could have a 5/5 Balduvian Horde. For RR you could have the red Slith (he has haste and gets +1/+1 every time he damages the opponent). Walls dont help you win!
--Edmiao 12:06, 17 December 2007 (MST) I'm sure we could debate the usefulness of walls until we are blue in the face. All I'm saying is that if your deck relies on a slow strategy to win, and that slow strategy will win in the end, then a wall can help you slow down the game. if slow game = win, then wall = good.
Jason, separate question regarding rules and timing. Take the big red giant 6/6 with R: sacrifice to deal 6 damage. Now say I have two of them on the board. I plan to use the stack: pay R and sacrifice the first giant, then pay R and sacrifice the next giant for a total of 12 damage. does that work, or would the first one in the stack kill the second one before it can get off? I think it works. when is damage dealt in the stack, for example if the stack has a Tim and an orcish artillery. Tim taps "Tim deals one damage to target player" then as a fast effect, artillery taps to do 2 damage to tim. stack resolves, artillery first, tim second. is tim dead before he can do his damage? or is all damage stacked up and applied at the end as the stack resoves?
--76.164.21.217 12:11, 17 December 2007 (MST)Damage resolves on the stack. Here is what happens, you sacrifice the dragon, it goes away before stack resolves. It deals its 6 damage to all creatures, in response to being dealt lethal damage you sacrifice the other dragon. Stack resolves as normal.
--Edmiao 12:14, 17 December 2007 (MST)that works because of the sacrifice. what about the tim vs artillery example? is the tim dead before he can deal his damage?
--76.164.21.217 12:19, 17 December 2007 (MST)The Prodigal Sorcerer is dead before his damage is dealt, but the damage is still dealt. Once damage is placed on the stack it is no longer tied in any way to its source.
Consider this: Opponents plays creatureless deck, wall useless. Opponent plays non-attacking creatures deck, wall useless. Opponent plays all flying creature deck, wall useless. Attacking creatures virtually always have value. High level winning decks never include walls unless they have a special ability they need (Tinder Wall). The attacking creatures shorten the game, but in your favor. Take the Slith Firewalker, he comes out super early and for RR diverts the enemies attention. The Balduvian Horde comes out mid-game and dominates the board. No opponent gives the wall a second thought. Your goal isnt to delay the game so you can do all the damage in one swoop. Your goal is to reduce your opponent to 0 life or run them out of cards.
--Gdaze -- Man I know I need to come up with better deck construction. That being said I like my artifact deck quite a bit, my brother kicked my booty with it. Hey what about wall of swords? Kinda expensive at four mana but its 3/5 flying. That being said disenchant could be considered useless too. What if the person your playing has no artifacts or enchantments? Or shatter for example, if the oppenent has no artifacts its not really useful.
I will say this though, the best wall has to be that one who gives haste. Thats so insane.
That said I'd really like to play some magic. Everyone is busy this week yah?
I really need to work on my deck sizes too, mine always end up way too big and the mana distribution seems to sucketh. I'm going to rework my famine deck as well as my white creature deck.
--Edmiao 12:42, 17 December 2007 (MST)I think it depends on what kind of decks you typically are up against. if your group enjoys creature decks, then walls are usefull and an early weak creature rapidly becomes obsolete. if your group uses a lot of artifacts, suddenly shatter is the best card in the world. but like gabe says, opponent with no artifacts, shatter is useless.
I'd love to play some magic. maybe friday, depends on the eta of my brother in law, who also plays. but my parents are not coming into town, so magic is likely on. i think definietely the friday after xmas. or even during the day on next wed-fri when i will be mostly off work.
BEN: my take is: cards that have broad utility against a lot of different deck types are best. Of that set, the ones where you are TOTALLY screwed if you don't have them are best. Disenchant is a classic example of this, and why, for instance, I think it is way better than shatter. Not everyone may have artifacts. not everyone has enchantments. but chances are damn good that they have one or the other, and that they are going to be very, very, useful to get rid of. That tri color deck is based exclusively on this principle, rather than some unifying purpose, and it works pretty well, although I think in 1 v 1 it would get trashed by a discard deck.
--Gdaze -- Yeah, duel purpose is always good. Thats why disenchant > shatter. Same mana cost but way more useful. Also that one gold card that you guys have that removes enchantment OR creature... now that is just wrong. I actually think they don't even make too many walls anymore.
Sweet, I don't work the day after Christmas so thats good for me too. (I mean really, how can I enjoy the day knowing I have to work the next day???) This Friday will work for me too because Noelle's sister will be visiting so I'll have a lot of free time.
I re-activated my WoW account...
--Edmiao 12:36, 18 December 2007 (MST) 2 headed giant rules:
each team starts with 30 life.
Each player gets one free mulligan regardless of landage in hand.
Any one-shot effect or characteristic-defining ability that refers to the “defending player” refers to one specific defending player, not to both of the defending players (ie hypnotic spectre).
For Islandhome or Landwalk abilities, it works if either player has the land type.
In a Two-Headed Giant game, a player plays Flame Rift, which reads, “Flame Rift deals 4 damage to each player.” Each team is dealt a total of 8 damage
The Two-Headed Giant variant can also be played with equally sized teams of more than two players. Each team’s starting life total is equal to 15 times the number of players on the team. (These variants are unofficially called Three-Headed Giant, Four-Headed Giant, and so on.)
In other multiplayer games (besides 2head giant, no one skips their draw step on turn 1.
--Edmiao 15:05, 18 December 2007 (MST) Ben, you said you had lost interest in your FoN deck. Cheryl wants to redesign it, that cool?
BEN: absolutely. The only deck I want left "as is" is my tricolor deck. The other two you can disassemble, revamp, whatever, as much as you like.
--Edmiao 16:23, 18 December 2007 (MST) coo. even your exploding giant deck? cus that one's nice. i might add a wall or two and the spell earthquake (RX deal X to all players and creatures without flying).
The Next Step in WHFRP Reboot
--Edmiao 16:32, 12 December 2007 (MST) Jason, Matt2, you guys joining WFRP? just curious. next episode will include fireworks.
GDAZE: OMG, I hope we end up blowing ourselves up and spending a fate point.
--Edmiao 16:42, 12 December 2007 (MST) my plan is to spend my one fate point to let me blow up the whole group. then they can all spend a fate point to survive the blast. wait, then i have no fate points left to save my own character. ah well, it will be a fitting end.
--Gdaze -- I would hope Matt wouldn't let us burn fate points like that heh heh, I think we already learned what happens when players have that much control! What our are characters even trying to do in WHF anyway? Shouldn't we hunt down that ass who stole all our moneyz?
The Next Step in Exemplars
--Walt Jonse 15:58, 11 December 2007 (MST) I would like to know what you would like to do in the game this coming session. This will help me prepare a few things etc.
Ed: topics for investigation: the world freedom alliance, the identity and allegance of XI, the intentions of Mr. Immortal. Viho will go to the WFA ball to these ends.
Gabe: Oh, who is Mr. Immortal? Like we met him? And did my guy get to talk to Dieter's guy yet? If not that will be for sure on my to do list. Otherwise pretty much the same reasons. Also I want to know who funded our good professor's research, see if any have ties with the Freedom Alliance.
--Edmiao 14:11, 12 December 2007 (MST)someone should write a recap for you. After much cajoling, Viho did convince Geoffry to spend a little time at venture industries, but hub was not around.
Also for GMs, I think Viho had some lines of investigation ongoing. Aimee (the computor programer at Venture Ind.) was going to try to hack into the warehouse computers to see what kind of malicious software may be present, or if there was evidence of naer'do'welling. Viho himself was researching scientists/inventors who might be capable of making XIs holographic projector (if that's what it was) as well as refreshing his knowledge of Verson Getorix (who would be included amongst the greatest inventors ever).
--76.164.21.217 14:22, 12 December 2007 (MST)This is all noted. I had meant to go over stuff with Matt Monday, but things did not work out. We have that tentatively scheduled for Thursday. Look for answers on those things that evening.
--76.164.21.217 14:29, 12 December 2007 (MST)One more thing. Matt and I discussed this and considering the excellent portrayal of the Highwayman by Brandon, the Dandy One will not be returning as an NPC, he will only be present when Brandon can play him.
--Gdaze-- Hey quick question for Jason and Matt nibon. I was hoping you could forward me Matt's email Jason, like to my hotmail account. That is the one I will primarly use from now on. I'd like to dicuss some of my guy's powers and how I should be able to expect to use them. Although I'm weak in combat my powers can be serously powerful in info gathering and tracking people down.
--76.164.21.217 17:11, 12 December 2007 (MST)Sent. I suggest we go over some of the stuff in the mentallist book, like mental martial arts, for instance.
