The Grays are the alien species encountered most frequently thus far by X-Com personnel. Several corpses have been returned to base for study by medical personnel.

By outward appearance, the Grays seem very frail and fragile, and based on combat reports, they are not nearly as sturdy as even an average human civilian. Their extreme frailty is somewhat deceptive, however, as their thin arms and legs are strengthened with the addition of cybernetic muscle tissue (which bears much similarity to electroreactive myomer fiber) grafted to their frames. This augmentation is coupled with back-up artificial organs that would help keep an individual Gray alive for a short period of time despite trauma that would normally kill them. Many of their organs are similar to our own, or serve analogous purposes. Some of their organs appear underdeveloped, however. Their digestive system is very simple, leading medical personnel to believe they subsist on some kind of special alien food. The corpses recovered appear to have no obvious genitalia, but body structure (relative to humans) suggests that the corpses recovered may have been female. This is also supported by the way that some of the internal organs (reproductive and elimination) seem to have been removed or re-routed. Cybernetic augmentation aside, all of the corpses are identical in size, shape and weight. The Grays's "blood" is red, but whatever it is that courses through their veins is an artificial substance that rapidly oxidizes in Earth's atmosphere, turning a dark purple. This blood substitute clots rapidly.

The Grays' brain size is impressive, and the organ itself is well-developed. Within the brain is an electronic implant that is similar in many ways to the Neural Override Implant recovered from several corrupted humans. The implant in the Grays is more complex; it ties into more areas of the Grays' brains, and whatever mechanism it uses to output signal is stronger, and presumably its receiver is more sensitive, as well. The brain also contains neural structures whose purpose is unknown at this time.

Completion of the Gray autopsy will currently yield benefits toward research of the following technologies: Electroreactive Myomer Fiber, Neural Override Implant, Alien Hierarchy (alien interrogations required), Advanced Field Medicine.
