Karl Gustav

Early Life

I grew up in a small village in the north countries. I led a simple small-town life. Eventually I found work as an itinerant craftsman, traveling from town to town as a metalworker, providing needed services to outlying towns and farms that lacked a local blacksmith. Most of the work consisted of making and repairing farm tools and household implements. There was also a lot of locksmithing. Thievery can be a big problem in outlying areas so locks are a big deal and they have a nasty tendency to rust up over time.

Rescue by the Hand of Ulric

While I was raised nominally in the faith of Ulric, as many are in the northern regions I was never the most religious of people. This changed dramatically one cold winter day. I was on the road between towns when I was accosted by thieves. I attempted to fend them off and injured one before the other was on me. I was able to knock him off his feet before making a run for the woods. As I fled he caught me in the back with a thrown dagger and I collapsed. As he bore down on me I was sure that I was done for. I whispered a prayer to Ulric and out of nowhere a great white wolf leapt at my attacker, catching him by the throat and taking him to the ground, killing him instantly.

The injury was bad and the wolf stayed with me, tending to the wound for several days until I was fit enough to move on my own. It was clear to me that the wolf was a messenger of the great god himself and from that first night I began to have strange dreams, telling me that I had been saved for a reason. I determined that this was a sign from Ulric that I should fully enter his service.

The Priesthood

As I made my way to the nearest town, it became more and more clear that Ulric had a place for me in the order of things. The wolf stayed with me and, as instructed in a dream sent by Ulric, I called him Siegfried. The wolf and the dreams guided me in a near delirious state, to the nearest town, which had a small temple to the great god. The priests found me at their doorstep, injured and barely conscious, a great white wolf standing guard at my side. They nursed me back to health and from that point I fully entered the service of the lord Ulric.

The Present

I spent two years training at the temple before my dreams told me that it was time to go out into the world and serve my lord. In my first life I had wandered the outlying regions, providing services to those who needed them and had no other real option. In my new life I would do much the same, only now the services were those of hunting and destroying the agents of chaos and protecting the people from them. Since then I have been guided by messages from Ulric, in the form of dreams and guidance from the wolf.
