We've received some most unfortunate news. The USS Yamato has been lost with all hands. This is a true tragedy. Unlike our Nebula-class, the Yamato was a Galaxy-class ship and therefore had hundreds of civilian families and scholars on board. To lose so many at once is hard to believe. The crew will be dealing with their grief for a while, although I think some of the other ships in the Triangle Fleet were closer to Captain Varley and his crew than the USS Niven was. We were given what details were relevant and held a ceremony on board. It's fortunate that we'd been grounded at Starbase 27 due to an overhaul of the warp drives when the news came in, as it gave us some time to process it.
We were headed towards the Romulan Neutral Zone to discourage any aggressive actions on their part when we diverted to Dolak IV in response to a garbled distress signal. After analyzing the signal, I found that it had been sent by some kind of slow warp system. The world contains a penal colony with primarily Orion Syndicate prisoners along with particularly venomous flora and fauna, so I was unsure what the emergency was, but the possibilities of Romulans, Orions or the prisoners themselves weren't too comforting. We contacted the USS Charleston for additional support, but they were further out than the Niven, so we were on our own for the time being.
