Alistair Bancroft was a childhood friend of Marie Kjelstad. He grew up in Elma, but during high school, his parents moved a few miles away, putting him in school in Montesano. His parents were Wiccan, and raised him according to their beliefs. The Bancroft family largely kept to themselves to avoid conflict with the locals, who they believed would not be understanding of their ways. Because of this, Alistair was often the target of bullies in school and made plenty of enemies.

When he met Marie in middle school, they got along well; she mostly blew off his antisocial rants, and he was impressed that she seemed to enjoy sharing his company. They kept in touch after his parents moved since he didn't live too far away, but when it came to college, Marie went to the University of Washington, while Alistair was relegated to Grays Harbor Community College because of financial reasons. During this time they drifted apart, and without Marie's influence in his life, Alistair drew a bad crowd to him and his ideologies. Alistair and Marie had dreamed up plenty of schemes to "take over the world," (which Marie always viewed as a harmless game. Alistair took these ideas to heart and evidently fashioned himself into some kind of domestic terrorist. He put one of these plans into motion one day with some accomplices, but his short-sighted plan fell apart when the government resisted his efforts and he found himself unable to fight back. Alistair was shot in head by a member of the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team. The wound was not fatal, but permanently debilitating. Alistair was tried and found guilty for his crimes, earning an effective life sentence. He is currently incarcerated, on the books at Monroe Correctional Complex, but is housed under perpetual guard at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The fact that Marie helped cook up his plan to take out the Washington State EMS relay station (the first part in his plan to cripple the government) was never revealed to the authorities. In actuality, it was a terrible plan (as evidenced by the fact that it failed miserably), and after hearing about the incident, Marie could never believe he had attempted it in the first place.
