Dear Petra the Human,

I think I like rules now even less than you. So many rules no longer apply to me and the only rule now that really matters is “Don't get caught.” I'm writing this because somebody broke that rule and I feel strangely guilty in a way I've never felt before when I turned her in to the Prince. It was the strangest pain, an emptying almost. Some part of me just...left.

Be glad for the emotional stability you had in your life! Even at the worst times, believe me, I know since I was there, things still made logical sense. Now, I just don't know. Much of my new life is still hard to comprehend but the more I live it, the more it feels natural. That's understandable, people adapt, but there is an X factor I have trouble accounting for. So many of the other vampires are mired in tradition and superstition so I can't get clear answers from them. There is truth here, I just need to find it.

The rule-breaker, a vampire named Marie (whom I'd never heard of prior to this. That is weird in and of itself), embraced some soulless cleaner named Mr. Tyler after being blackmailed into doing so by somebody she refused to name. On a side-note, I admit I can't fathom the mental gymnastics these Catholics do to justify their actions. It was bad enough dealing with the hypocrites back in South Carolina, but these swamp Christians are much worse.

Anyway, this whole situation feels very much like somebody making a power play against the Prince. Josue mentioned he smelt a change in the air when he contracted my services for his human associates a few months ago. Five embraces without the Prince's approval all in a single night – that takes organization and gall. One of the sires, John-Harley, was even exiled by Vidal. Whoever put this conspiracy together throws around a lot of weight. The Prince is always a bit inscrutable but he seems less concerned about this than I'd be in his position.

Vidal is stuck in the past; perhaps it is time for a change. The normal biological imperatives to keep pushing and achieving are really dulled due to this vampiric disease. I've been treading water for too long. Nothing is going to happen unless I make it happen.

I have my doubts that Leo will thwart Mr. Verdun's investigative spirit with a simple thrashing. I think it is high time I got Mr. Verdun to start doing some digging for me.

Love,
Petra the Kindred
