This would be basically a Firefly rip-off, set in the Nephon System, which was a topography I was going to use for 40k but makes way more sense in this context. The gameplay would consist of the players visiting one locale (planet, space station, etc), per session; the destination could be decided at the end of the previous session if continuity was desired, or determined by the GM during prep time.

The players would be a spaceship crew trying to make their way in a harsh world, living from one job to the next. Instead of the gritty day-to-day being the gameplay, however, it'd be the impetus for involving the players in the session's plot, either through potential for profit, for ship maintenance, food, what have you. Maybe there's a strange artifact on one world, or maybe another has a routine job that then goes awry.

The system for this (and this could potentially be a one-shot), would be Dogs in the Vineyard, which, while having a more abstract and freeform approach than most system, is so elegant in its approach that I really want to try it.
