Chapter 1
With Lord Braddock Sterling and master Gordon Sterling away from home on an extended business errand, Jordan Sterling was left in charge of matters of the house. One morning, when Maester Harlan Bywater was away from the rookery, an invitation to a tournament held in the honor of the crown of King Robert Baratheon arrived. Maester Armond Ecaz, being the next in line, was given the invitation from a page boy during breakfast. Young masters Balen Sterling and Willhelm Sterling and Ser Darys Blackstone were sharing their meal with him and Balen took it upon himself to make preparations for a small party to leave for King's Landing the following day. This included recruiting two pages, Justin Thorne and Osmund Derleth, and a squire, Edwyn Hardy.
During the second day of the journey, the party encountered a grisly scene. A murder of crows were circling above a clearing in the woods a short distance away from the Kingsroad and underneath them, a pack of six starved wolves were feasting upon the bloody carnage of five strongly built men. After half of the scavengers loped off with shots from Willhelm, the party investigated the scene. The only thing of note was that one of the men was carrying a sword with a fancy stag hilt. It looked like the Baratheon stag, but without the crown.
When it was getting dark that night, they arrived at Dag's Inn. Unfortunately, they were met with icy stares and curt words from the local regulars and the employees. Though they were able to secure rooms, young master Adham Dannett from House Dannett had been by earlier that day spinning a tale of how House Sterling being responsible for a raid on Dannett lands, killing a number of their smallfolk. In asking around, the party also learned that a few days ago, a man, presumably a knight wearing the crest of a fox, was at the inn recruiting mercenaries. Six of them were hired and one was seen carrying a sword with an unusual hilt. The stableboy, Colin Lockheart, recalled seeing one of the hired hands coming by again earlier that morning asking for a horse, but then continuing southward on foot when none were for sale.
