High stakes gambler

So I really like the idea of an expert gambler. A gambler who's good enough could provide supplementary income.
But, what I don't want to happen is the game to become about "shuttle matt's character to another spot, oh shit he's in trouble, let's get him out." I don't think that kind of thing is fair to the other players.
I also don't want to be playing the character such that he's attempting to resolve every situation with a game of cards.
So, I'm going to consider this character more of a studied (and maybe phenomenally lucky) risk-taker. His particular specialty (cards, piloting, captaining, hole-digging, whore-punching, or some combination) will be informed by his ability to know when to hold em and when to fold em.
